Listening to the Mockingbird
“When you go to bed, listen in a gentle, calm way to the night sounds. Sometimes you’ll hear the night birds, the hum of air conditioning, the traffic outside, a helicopter flying overhead, or the soft rumble of voices. Just lie in bed and listen. You hear these different sounds so often that you unconsciously erase them from your mind. Put some attention on them now.
“While you listen to these physical sounds, sing HU, and then listen for the sacred sounds of ECK. They come in many forms, sometimes as the ringing or tinkling of bells or the sound of musical instruments.
“Try to identify as many different physical sounds as you can. Go to sleep with these sounds in your consciousness, all the while knowing they are part of the HU, the universal Sound which embodies all others.
“Listen carefully, because in these sounds you will find the secret name of God.”

The Purifying Sound
“Close your eyes and look to the Spiritual Eye. Sing HU, an old and secret name for God. It is one of the most powerful words for spiritual upliftment that I can give you.
“As you sing HU, listen for the Sound. The Sound may be heard in any number of different ways. It can be like the sound of a train going by, a bird, buzzing bees, sometimes a flute, or even guitars. The way you hear It just depends on where you are.
“These sounds are the action of the Holy Spirit, the ECK, as Its atoms vibrate in the invisible worlds. The Sound you hear is the vibration at the particular level to which you are attuned at the time.
“Imagine the Sound purifying you, removing the impurities of Soul. It will bring you an understanding of how your actions have caused your problems. It will also give you an indication of what you can do to unfold and how to figure out the way to do things right. “

A Simple Request
“If you’re unhappy, open yourself to the possibility that there is something better.
“If you’re an ECKist say, “Mahanta,* please show me thy ways. Show me what may be there for me.”
“If you’re Christian or Jewish or of any other faith, look to the God of your faith. Look to your savior, look to your way of spirituality, and ask, “Show me truth, God.”
“If you’re sincere, God’s Voice, the Holy Spirit, will begin opening you to truth.”

Heart or Head?
“Our minds play such an important role in our lives and they have a place, but in serious situations how do you know when to listen to your heart instead of just the facts and information inside your head? How do you know when your heart is speaking (and not just fear or sympathy)?”
“You’ve hit upon the whole problem of living. When does one listen to the heart or the head?
“If it’s any consolation to you, that’s the great mystery which ages upon ages of people have struggled to understand. In a pure sense the two camps, which include everyone, are the head and the heart people. But no one’s all one or the other.
“From what I’ve seen, those who are mostly head, or mind, people have a harder time in trying to deal with the hard questions of life.
“Some of these hard questions include: What is love? Does God really exist? Is there life after death? In each case a mind person wants proof. Until it comes he takes the position: Since I don’t know the answer, no one else can either.
“Even more, a mind person is likely to go out of his way to destroy the beliefs of others. So a mind person is apt to be rigid and unforgiving in regard to the beliefs of others. A mind person is basically of a juvenile mind. He’s still young in spiritual experience.
“The heart person takes what life has to offer and is grateful for its blessings. Life is relatively simple for him. (Oddly, a mind person probably considers a heart person a simpleminded fool.) ”
“But no matter. A heart person tends toward love, patience, and tolerance. He is like sunshine to others.
“Head person: When faced with a complicated knot in a rope, he tries to unravel each strand.
“Heart person: Like Alexander the Great, he simply cuts the rope and conquers all. Because he’s rich in spiritual experience, he quickly gets to the heart of things.”

The Purpose of Eckankar
“Is Eckankar really the direct path back to God?”
“Divine Spirit has provided many paths for Soul to take back to God. Each path roughly fits the consciousness of a like-minded group.
”That is why there is no reason to look down on any religious teaching. The ECK Masters come to enliven, not destroy, religious teachings, because periodically the spiritual light dims.
“No one path is true for everyone. That includes Catholicism, Protestant synods, the Oriental beliefs. Many of the different Christian groups are still grappling with the Golden Rule given twenty centuries ago.
“A lot of attention is put upon sects today, but the spilling of blood that was the baptism for the rise of Christian power is ignored. The karmic debts incurred by the priestcraft during the past centuries is not where one wants to put his attention. I am not criticizing Christian history, because I played my role helping in the establishment of several paths.
“By now you have developed your own ways of testing whether someone’s claim has any degree of truth. Use that method and measure the teachings of Eckankar.
“Is a path true? What are you looking for in it?
“In ECK, you ought to be able to see the Light and hear the Sound of God. No path on earth can promise its followers prosperity and unblemished health. That is being ignorant of facts, of how things are.
“A spiritual path ought to show the way to God. If you find one that does this, then follow it. If not, you must find another that fits you.”
